Many southerners believe that Slavery was not as harsh as some would assume it to have been and that many African Americans fought willingly for the south. Those ideas stem from a regional's population justifications for supporting the legacy of the confederacy and those who participated in the efforts to subdue "Northern Aggression." It's complete bullshit because what history does tell us is that there were entire regiments of African Americans who fought against the succeeding south. They were often called color regiments and even though they faced more atrocious and violent repercussions if taken as prisoners of war, they chose to fight for freedom and a chance at living like first class citizens in the towns they help built nationwide.
